5 Canons of Rhetoric

Cicero’s 5 Canons of persuasion:

  • Invention
  • Arrangement
  • Style
  • Memory
  • Delivery

Invention:

  • Identify the question at issue
  • Is the issue simple or complex?
    • Can I break it down into smaller parts?
  • What are the counter arguments?
  • What do I want to accomplish?
    • Change mood, mind or motivation?
  • Who is my audience?
  • How can I use logos, ethos, pathos?

Arrangement:

  • Edit your ideas
  • Put everything in order
    • Intro
    • Narration
    • Proof
    • Refutation
    • Conclusion

Delivery

  • Delivery is deemed the most important thing. Mediocre speech but excellent delivery will always win over a good speech with bad delivery.
