Availability bias is the tendency to weigh information we can quickly recall as more valid or representative than it actually is.

Why does recall feel like frequency?

Easily-recalled examples feel frequent and important, so the mind treats recall ease as a proxy for truth and skips alternatives.

  • Vivid news (plane crashes, shark attacks) feels more common than it is
  • We ignore alternative solutions because the first one comes to mind fastest
