Horizontal Coordinate System

Azimuth

An azimuth is the angular measurement in a spherical coordinate system which represents the horizontal angle from a cardinal direction, most commonly north.

Isn't this just longitude?

So, while both are measured in degrees, longitude is a coordinate that helps define where you are on Earth, whereas azimuth describes the direction you’re facing or looking.

  • Longitude is used to specify a location Imagine a local spherical reference frame. The Azimuth would tell you the horizontal angle.

So the longitude is the azimuth for the WGS 84 reference frame.
