Electronic Control Unit (ECU)

Saw this term at NVIDIA.

oohh this is what they have on cars

Ah yes, this is what Aryan is explaining to me.

https://yoginsavani.com/types-of-ecu-in-a-car/#1-engine-control-module-ecm

Types of ECUs (main ones):

  1. Engine Control Module (ECM)
  2. Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) Control Module
  3. Electronic Power Assisted Steering (EPAS)
  4. Transmission Control Module (TCM)
  5. Traction Control Unit (TCU)

how are all the ECUs connected in a car? is there like a central computer

No, it’s decentralized, connected through a complex network.

Yes, there’s also a ODB port that can be used to read the state of the car (velocity, steering, etc). You can imagine this as a read-only port, you can’t use it to send commands to the car.
