Logical Fallacy

Genetic Fallacy

The genetic fallacy concludes something about a person, idea, institute, or theory based on its origins rather than its current character or merits.

Doesn't origin matter?

The fallacy ignores that change is possible. The origin of a thing doesn’t fix its present nature or worth.

Example

The Volkswagen Beetle is an evil car because it was originally designed by Hitler’s army.

The author equates the character of a car with the character of the people who built it, but the two are not inherently related.

Redressing the fallacy

Invite the person to reflect on the possibility that change occurs. We cannot assume something is the way it is simply because it was that way in the past. If there is evidence something has changed, present it.
