Myth and realities of hypnosis
2 Theories to explain:
- The Socio-cognitive Theory proposes that hypnosis is a normal mental state, during which social cues induce pliable individuals to adopt the social role of a hypnotized person.
- The Dissociative Theory proposes that hypnosis is an altered mental state, during which a single stream of consciousness separates into two independent streams of thought; one that can communicate with the external world, and a silent observer that cannot interact with the outside environment.
