Isaac Newton
It’s actually insane how much Newton contributed to our modern understanding of the world. Newton invented Calculus. He also invented the newton’s laws.
Before Newton, Western civilization’s perception of motion was dominated by the Aristotelean view, dating back to 4th century BC (according to Aristotle, in the absence of an external force, or “motive power”, an object would come to rest).
Newton published his laws of motion in 1687 as part of his three-volume work Philosophie Naturalis Principia Mathematica, or Principia.
