Logical Fallacy

Loaded Question Fallacy

The loaded question fallacy asks a question with an assumption built in so that it can’t be answered without appearing guilty.

Why can't you just answer?

The question smuggles in a premise the responder never agreed to. Any direct answer concedes the premise.

Scenario

Grace and Helen were both romantically interested in Brad. One day, with Brad sitting within earshot, Grace asked in an inquisitive tone whether Helen was having any problems with a fungal infection.

Redressing the Fallacy

If someone asks you a loaded question, don’t engage with the loaded question itself. Instead, answer the question that is assumed but unasked. Draw attention to the assumption that is being made and address the assumption.
