Placebo Effect
The placebo effect is a small real physiological response produced by the belief that a treatment will work, independent of any active ingredient.
Why must trials control for it?
Without controlling for it, any improvement in a treatment group could be belief, not biology. This is the reason for placebo controls and blinding.
