The Texas Sharpshooter Fallacy
The Texas sharpshooter fallacy ignores the differences while focusing on the similarities, drawing an inaccurate conclusion from cherry-picked data.
Why isn't the pattern real?
Data does not speak for itself, it requires interpretation. Selecting only the points that fit a pattern manufactures a signal where there is none.
Example
The makers of Sugarette Candy Drinks point to research showing that of the five countries where Sugarette drinks sell the most units, three are in the top ten healthiest countries on earth, therefore Sugarette drinks are healthy.
Warning
A well-rounded education should include at least one statistics course. If that’s not an option, consider reading the 1950s classic How to Lie with Statistics.
