Alan Baddeley

Alan Baddeley is a British psychologist whose working memory model replaced the older view of short-term memory as a passive buffer.

Why?

A single-store model can’t explain dissociations like impaired verbal short-term memory with intact visuospatial memory, or vice versa.

Components:

  • Central executive: control
  • Phonological loop: verbal
  • Visuospatial sketchpad: visual and spatial
  • Episodic buffer: integrates the others (added later)
