Tips for designing v-belts

From Jeremy Fielding: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=syWiGYDOM70

  1. “Extra” small pulleys are problems, they dont have belts that wrap well. People think its because of belt slippage, but just get a bigger pulley
    1. Not having a good wrap
  2. Too much tension on belt is not good, results in premature wear on bearings on the machine. There should be a bit of flex on the belt,
  3. The belt should match the pulley
  4. Center to center distance, you don’t want to go more than 3 times the sum of the diameters of the two pulleys. Minimum distance is the diameter of the larger pulley
  5. Using an idler pulley which helps increase wrap
  6. Check power rating of belt
  7. Pulley diameter vs power rating
