Carl Friedrich Gauss

(1777 – 1855) is widely regarded as the greatest mathematician of the last two centuries. In his landmark work, Disquisitiones Arithmeticae, published when Gauss was 23, he introduced congruence notation and provided a mechanism to treat divisibility with arithmetic.
