Category vs Concept
A category is a class of similar things in the world; a concept is its mental representation.
- Categorization: deciding what category something belongs to
- Concept attainment: figuring out what defines a concept
Competing views on how categorization works:
- Classical View: necessary and sufficient features
- Prototype View: compare to an average best example
- Exemplar View: compare to specific stored instances
- Schemata View: organized frameworks of knowledge
- Knowledge-based View: categories depend on purpose and theories
The first three are similarity-based; the last two are explanation-based.
