Brain Anatomy

Cerebral Cortex

The cerebral cortex is the outer layer of the forebrain, organized into four lobes.

  • Frontal lobe
    • motor cortex: movement
    • premotor cortex: planning movement
    • prefrontal cortex: executive functions, planning, inhibition, working memory, strategy
  • Parietal lobe: spatial processing, attention, body sensation
  • Occipital lobe: vision
  • Temporal lobe: auditory processing, memory-related functions

The cortex is also lateralized across hemispheres, and certain functions live in specific regions (Localization of Function).
