• Contain chlorophyll (green pigment) • Found in leaves and other green organs of plants and algae • Functions in photosynthesis • Bounded by a double membrane – Inner and outer membrane – Intermembrane space • Inside there is another membrane system – Thylakoids are flattened, interconnected sacs – Granum is a stack of thylakoids – Stroma is the fluid outside the thylakoids → Contains chloroplast DNA, ribosomes, enzymes
