Cognitive Bias

Confirmation Bias

Confirmation bias is the tendency to find, favor, and remember information that already supports our existing beliefs.

Why do we filter evidence this way?

Updating beliefs is cognitively expensive and threatens identity, so the mind preferentially samples evidence that requires no update.

  • Interpretive bias is a sub-type: it shapes how much weight we give to ambiguous evidence rather than which evidence we look at
  • The mirror in the other temporal direction is Hindsight Bias
