Conformity

Why conform?

  • One reason is for social acceptance. Because humans live in groups, we necessarily care about what other people think. Conforming signals our commitment to the group and identifies us as ingroup members. Contradicting the group to serve accuracy risks status in the group or outright ostracism.

But conforming is not always good. See Milgram’s Obediance Experiment:

  • “you should remember that you have a choice, and that you are ultimately responsible for that choice”

Although I disagree to some extent, if you don’t want to get killed in some countries, then you better shut your mouth.
