Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM)

Homosexuality was removed as a form of treatable mental illness from DSM II in 1973, instantly curing millions of people of a “mental disorder” overnight.

The DSM is the gold standard used by mental health professionals to diagnose and treat mental disorders. It is useful because it is informed by research and is updated periodically to reflect new knowledge. Consequently, we should recognize that at least some of what we think we know about mental disorders is fallible, and will change in the future. Thus, we should be cautious about the diagnoses applied, and the drugs prescribed for treatment.
