Norms of Assertion

The norms of assertion are the implicit obligations you accept when making an Assertion.

Why do assertions need norms?

The Epistemic Community only works if assertors are accountable.

  1. Truth-aptness: what you assert must be capable of being true or false (Truth-Apt)
  2. Belief: assert only what you believe
  3. Warrant: be ready to defend the claim with reasons and evidence when challenged

Violations

  • Bullshit (indifference to truth)
  • Lying (asserting what you believe to be false)
  • Burden-of-proof shifting (Burden of Proof Fallacy) violates norm 3 directly
