Social Facilitation

Social facilitation is the effect in which the presence of others can enhance our performance on simple or well-practiced tasks.

However, where the task is difficult or complex, and it is unfamiliar, social facilitation typically hinders performance.

In other words, social facilitation benefits those who are skilled, and worsens unskilled players.

This is why I choke my Badminton games. Because I am unskilled.

Example:

  • those cyclists racing in pairs tended to record faster times than cyclists racing solo.
  • you probably played better when in a group (with co-actors) and even better still when playing in front of an audience
