Top-down Processing

Processing that uses expectations, prior knowledge, and context to interpret sensory input. The same ambiguous visual can be read differently depending on what you were primed to expect.

Contrasts with Bottom-up Processing, which works purely from the data up. In practice, perception is almost always a blend — the brain reconciles what’s out there with what you already know.
