Backlash

Not talking about backlash from uploading a terrible video, but backlash in the Mechanical Engineering world.

I underestimate backlash. But apparently, it’s a really important issue.

How much backlash should you have?

From ChatGPT: “Spur gears should be meshed tightly enough to transmit power efficiently, but not so tightly that excessive friction or wear occurs. The recommended backlash (clearance between the teeth of the gears) for spur gears depends on the size and application of the gears.

Generally, the recommended backlash for spur gears ranges from 0.05% to 0.2% of the pitch circle diameter of the gear. For example, if the pitch circle diameter of a gear is 100mm, the recommended backlash would be between 0.05mm and 0.2mm.

However, it’s important to note that the optimal amount of backlash may vary depending on factors such as the application, speed, torque, and accuracy requirements. It’s always best to consult the manufacturer’s specifications or an engineer with expertise in gear design to determine the appropriate amount of backlash for your specific application.”
