Cultural Diversity
Canada is known to celebrate its “cultural diversity”.
Ideally we are a cultural mosaic. However, John Porter wondered we are really a vertical mosaic.
Cultural Diversity is an interesting idea, since there are many pros and cons.
pros:
- More accurate picture of the past
- Helps students better understand complex present
- Strengthens academic performance visible minorities
- Prepares us to live in interdependent world
Cons:
- Encourages divisiveness
- Erodes claims to universal truths
- Fails to benefit minorities
