The frequency domain refers to the analysis of mathematical functions or signals with respect to frequency, rather than time.

Use Cases

One of the main reasons for using a frequency-domain representation of a problem is to simplify the mathematical analysis.

Where is the frequency domain used?

The transfer function of a system allows us to compute its output response, y(t), to an input signal, u(t), using the following algorithm:

1. Compute $U(s)=L\{u(t)\}$
2. Compute $Y(s)=G(s)U(s)$ This step is algebraic, no differential operators are involved, as it would be the case if you solved the system of differential-algebraic equations (9) in the time domain.
3. Compute $y(t)=L^{-1}\{Y(s)\}$
