Argument

Premise

A premise is a statement offered as support for the Conclusion of an Argument.

Constraints

Premises must be Truth-Apt. In standard form they’re listed as P1, P2, … above the conclusion.

Premise indicators: because, since, given that, for, as, in that.

A sub-conclusion (intermediate conclusion) is drawn from earlier premises and then serves as a premise for the final conclusion. Chains: P → sub-conclusion → C.

An Enthymeme is an argument with an unstated premise; making it explicit is part of standardizing.
