Value

Not to be confused with Value Function in the context of RL.

Values are culturally defined standards and broad guidelines for social living.

However, values are often inconsistent with one another

  • Value of Individual rights vs. value shared collective well-being: in the Pandemic setting, going out for a restaurant (individual right) vs. staying at home for the common well-being.

This idea of inconsistency can also be seen when we studied the idea of Role Strain for a principal (value of warmth and kindness, vs. value of strictness and seriousness)

When talking about values, we also look at Ideal culture vs. Real culture Ideal culture = how things should be Real culture = how things actually are within society

Examples

  • Our ideal about Marriage is monogamous. However, real culture includes divorces.
  • Ideal: Equality. Real culture: Systemic Inequality
