Interesting to see how this parallels with my understanding of Theory.
Sociological Theory
- Theory: statement of how & why facts are related
- Theoretical paradigm: set of fundamental assumptions that guides thinking
In Sociology, we use different theoretical paradigms to guide our thinking, into how we interpret the world.
- Serendipity about telling yourself stories. You tell yourself stories to interpret the world in a certain way, that is the definition of perspective.
Perspectives that I studied in Sociology:
There is no right or wrong paradigm/approach. Each has their strength. Here are some critiques for each:
- Structural-Functional: Too broad, ignores inequalities, conflict
- Social-Conflict: Too broad, ignores shared values, mutual interdependence. Pursues political goals (applies to Feminism too)
- Symbolic Interaction: Ignores larger social structures
You should use each of these as tools to better think about the world.
The two notation examples for evaluating these Sociological Theorys are taking a look at Education and Culture.
